Our first publication - “Kilmorich School” available for £5.00
At the Here We Are centre we display exhibitions about our community and its surroundings created out of material we ourselves research and develop. Since we opened the centre in 2001 we have covered several topics, such as landownership, power, schools, our climate. As each exhibition is presented the previous one gets hidden away in our loft ! We had an idea of creating a series of books to preserve the material and to make it readily available. So we applied for and were granted funds from Communities Scotland New Ideas Fund, to do a pilot of proposed booklets. This “Kilmorich School” we are pleased to say now exists, is for sale at the centre for £5, or email us for a copy £5.50 p and p. We are unsure whether we will be able to further the series and the design element it very time consuming (expensive!) relative to our small print run.

The concept
Our exhibitions hold a mirror up to what happens today, explores how this grew out of the past, and then encourages us to step back and look at the crystal ball of the future. Putting the place we live and work in under the microscope like this we hope to help equip ourselves for the choices in the future. There is another dimension to what we do: we look at the local detail in the context of the bigger picture – the Highlands of Scotland and further a field to Europe and beyond. So from here at the head of Loch Fyne we demonstrate wider issues and we see ourselves from the perspective of both time and distance.

Thus a snapshot such as this, the story of 150 years of a small school in a small village at the head of Loch Fyne, is a part of the jigsaw of this place but also touches on broader issues.

What was, is, education for? What was important to the teachers, to the scholars? What do we remember about our school days? School dinners – where did the food come from? Who made them, where? What about games and fun, adventure and friendship? Where is everyone now?

This has lead to our new project 'Our Houses Their Stories' a biography of our houses and the lives of the people who lived in them.
